Sedation dentistry is a method of using medication to calm and relax patients during dental procedures. Sedation dentistry is any dental treatment where a patient is completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the process. This is often used for patients with a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or anxiety or nervousness about going to the dentist. It takes away the stress from an otherwise tense experience. It also allows your dentist to work more quickly and get more done in each visit. At Lutke Dental, our dentist can choose from several options, such as nitrous oxide sedation, oral sedatives, or IV sedation, depending on your age and overall health and the complexity of the treatment needed.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

This form of sedation dentistry is often called “laughing gas.” It gets its name from the euphoric effect it can have when inhaled by patients. It is often used to help with mild to moderate levels of anxiety or discomfort during dental procedures. It is mixed with oxygen and delivered via a mask worn over the patient's mouth and nose. The effects wear off quickly, allowing the patient to return to normal breathing within minutes. Patients can cooperate with the dentist while under the effects of nitrous oxide because the medication helps them relax.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill or liquid medication that relaxes you. Typically, the medicine is taken about an hour before the procedure begins. You will be awake and able to respond to questions, but you will be much calmer than you would be without the sedative. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment as you may be drowsy and unable to operate a vehicle safely.

IV Sedation

With IV sedation, dentists can administer more potent anti-anxiety drugs and provide them to the patient through a needle in the arm or hand. This allows the dentist to control the amount of sedative being administered and provides a longer-acting solution. Patients do not experience any nausea or other side effects of the medication. It also carries many benefits as oral sedative, including little pain, no memory of the procedure, and relaxation of the entire body and mind.
